You play bassoon? I am soooooo jealous. I played bassoon in high school, but haven't been able to afford to own one since. Maybe one day, when I have a job and a house and can take out a second mortgage in order to be able to buy an instrument …

And just think, my bassoon is fairly cheap. Cellos that cost more than a few grand are rare, whereas bassoons pretty much start at 5k and go up from there. My teacher has one that's worth roughly 20k.

I do! I started playing again this summer after not playing since high school, and I am sloooowly getting back into it. So far I am allowed to play scales and compositions composed of no more than 5 notes, with varying time signatures (4/4, 3/4, 6/8, and 2/4 being the ones I remember from today's lesson).

Pretty much. I said this to a few friends and then realized it just had to be immortalized on DW/lj.

Interestingly enough, I also used to play the cello. I would joke with people that I took up the bassoon because I wanted a slightly larger range and also not to have to learn any other clef.

Ah, fun.

That's the right way to do it, though. When I learned in high school, I was the kid who could learn any instrument. I had an oboe and an oboe book shoved at me with the music for a piece we were playing, I don't even remember which, but I did love the oboe. And then we had a Star Wars arrangement, and in the Star Wars suites, the bassoon has an actual line, so it was less than a month away from the concert and they shoved the bassoon at me and told me to learn to play it. I love it, but sadly, have fallen out of playing it. Would love to have one and play again, though, there is some beautiful music for bassoon and not just the Star Wars parts that it gets, but the actual classical music for it as well.

Yes. Or at least, in the part of it that's from the piece Across The Stars. I think that in the full orchestral version, said line is also given to the cello, however, high school was a wind ensemble, so we had no cello and during a couple places the trombones had different lines, so it was JUST ME. IT WAS FECKING AMAZING. BECAUSE PEOPLE HEARD ME AND I GOT TO SIT IN THE SOLOIST SEAT.
