It's hump day! We're almost at the halfway point! Work has been kind of draggy this week. I've been spending a lot of time on the phone, and it is not making me happy. There are other things to do, and it's been difficult to get any of them done. I could have made some moves and gotten a couple more patients in, but there just hasn't been time. I've had to release a bunch of holds I have because I haven't had time to look to see if any of them are movable. I can't wait til we have this batch of new people and the next trained, so maybe it takes some pressure off the phones coworkers, and I can do more actual work.

I did get some time to do other things in the am, and some of the m worked out, So that was good. And a couple during. I got to deal with the pt who had been bounced around because people don't necessarily understand that there are documents as they relate to combo MRIs and MRAS. Especially MRAs. Theres's a handy document about Cardiac MRIS and then MRAs. Because some MRAs have toe be done together. Like the Loey Diets Protocol. It's five separate MRAs that should be like 3hours total. But when you add them, they become a protocol that cane be done in 60 minutes. (Tbf, even our other PAS3s don't always get this one. I know it because I've spent plenty of time with the Cardiac document, but People schedule it all over the place. So I fixed that, spicy patient and all.

Yesterday morning, after I finished my journal, I went and wrote a bit on the new campaign, Marchen. By the time I had to go get ready for work, I had 929 words out. The number annoyed me, so at lunch I wrote more, topping out for the day at 1229. I was much more pleased with that number. It's moved them through two countries, so I am pleased. I feel like I'm set up well to have the campaign writen or at least the majority fleshed out. I certainly have worked on the fly in the past if they break the campaign, or if some random villian will prompt their ire, leading to a new chapter about going to deal with them.

Even if I didn't write anything more until after we started playing, I'd be fine.

I offered the musical introduction for the player characters in Marchen, and the players jumped on it. I've got two out of the four already, plus the music I'm using in my lead in. I'm about to upload the player's intro. The two I've gotten already are very interesting. Totally different feels to them. One is the Dishonored soundtrack, which is cool, in a dark, moody sort of way.

And then Jess sent me a band I've not heard of, with a track that was wistful and maybe a little regretful.

I on the other hand was not so original, and picked May it Be from Lord of the Rings (So cliche!) as performed by the 2Cellos.

I honestly cannot wait for this campaign to start. I'm hoping it's a lot of fun and that the small clues I'm dropping will make it a fulfilling mystery.

In other news, the vacation is now 43 days away. It's very exciting! I'm still nervous about Yoda, but I'm going to be positive, and believe that this is going to go well. I've started looking at the app more closely, looking at the deck plans, so I will know where I'm going when the time comes. I feel like I need to know the most about everything, so I can make the vacation smooth for us.

As usual, I want this to be the best vacation possible. I want it to be perfect for the people I'm draging along in my wake, my Travel Prince(ss). They have an itinerary that I printed out and nothing else. I may let them carry their boarding pass, but that's about it. They can have their boarding pass for the flight once we go to the airport and print them all out from my phone, where they live. Our car service's info? In my phone. The hotels? In my phone. Our Excursions are all in my phone as well.

Mind you, while we're in Vancouver? That free day is entirely up to them. They can tag along with Jess and I, or they can do there own thing. And once we're on the boat, they can do whatever they would like.

Okay, time for me to work on Marchen and maybe take a nice shower. Everyone have a most wonderful Wednesday!

Ardnakelty has no time for Guards. The townland will run its own investigation, spreading unseen beneath the official enquiry like ancient trailways underlie the brash modern roads; it'll reach its own conclusions, and deal out its own justice. [loc. 1069]

Third in the trilogy that began with The Searcher and continued with The Hunter. Cal Hooper's life in the small village of Ardnakelty seems settled: he's more or less engaged to Lena, and Trey is finding friends and possibly even romance. Then a young woman -- Rachel, fiancee of local big-shot Tommy Moynihan's son Eugene -- is found dead in the river. Read more... )

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

In other news, I was saddened to learn that Nicholas Brendon had passed away (so soon after James Van Der Beek, who became famous around the same time, a time when I was becoming an adult along with the characters that they played, and after Michelle Trachtenberg also passed.)

The Costs of Renewable Energy

Experts are really far apart on what such a world-wide renewable infrastructure would cost.

There are also costs other than financial. Take wind power. To flying creatures (bats, birds, butterflies, etc.) those are whirling blades of doom. Less dangerous models exist, but are less popular as they tend to be more expensive and/or less efficient. Then there is the problem of noise and vibration. Up close, it's usually miserable for people. Farther away, even the subliminal effects can cause problems like headaches and distraction. In other words, it's not good to put a wind farm near where people live, where "near" can mean 3-5 miles.

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

Manda took and passed her driving test! Was this morning; went very well, apparently. She made one or two (minor) mistakes, but on the whole the driving instructor was evidently impressed and told her that she is an excellent driver, so!

(There was some question vis a vis: "who was your instructor?", which, ha? Glad I've still got it, I guess. Welp.)

Let her borrow my car (me in the passenger seat) to get over there and then back; she did fine on the drive out, though as I remarked, the way I had her go out (via the highway) was probably more intense than the actual test itself. "You're going to pass and it'll be fine, but that's not going to be a fun trip" — and indeed, it wasn't, though we managed well enough.

On the drive out, "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd popped up.

"Oh, I love this song! I didn't realize you liked it."

"...my dude, I got it from you."

"What? You like The Weeknd?"

And so I laughed a little and explained that she'd sent it to me ages back, and so it had of course made it onto my regular playlist, because she was right that I liked it quite a bit.

"I didn't realize —"

We talked a little more, and I told her the joke I have about Max and our friend Brian — that they're "brainwormed" in the same way ("same worms, different brain"), and then how [personal profile] shadaras refers to it (because we have a lot of overlap in some specific areas and sometimes it's like, "yes, this person will love this" because one of us adores it), and —

"Okay," she said. "I get it, I think. It's like — there's this song, I think it's by, uh, a band called of Montreal?"

"...yeah?"

"It's, um, the chorus is something about Antarctica? It came on in your car —"

"When we were driving out to see Colin Meloy in Astoria in December of 2022?"

"...YES!"

"Yeah, um — the one where they keep talking about how much they love each other and the deranged roleplay they want to do?"

"Yes! That one!"

"'Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games'," and I went ahead and pulled it up.

We both listened to it — she sang along for bits of it, while I only sang the bridge, which is my favorite part and why I love the song ("maybe I'll never die, I'll just keep growing younger with you/and you'll grow younger too/now it seems too lovely to be true/but I know, the best things always do"), then when it was finished:

"That's the brain worm you infected me with," said very lovingly, which —

You know, I suppose there's worse legacies to have?

Saltcrop, Yume Kitasei, 2025 science fiction novel. Two sisters in a post-collapse near future sail in search of the third. By description this sounded like something I would be into but I wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't been reading it for a book club; I just never wanted to know that much what was going to happen next. There was one cool vivid scene on the boat with unexpected music and an aurora and phosphorescent whales, I liked that. And I guess I'm interested in different takes on this kind of world and this was one.

1. Today when I was just coming back to the store from my after-lunch walk, I saw some people coming out who looked familiar and realized it was Bill and Lisa, a couple of local travel/food vloggers we watch occasionally. I told them I like their channel and they were very friendly.

2. Only one more week of work before vacation! Trying not to stress out about it too much, but there are so many things to stress out about. At least LAX does not seem to be affected by the TSA/ICE issues other airports are facing.

3. Gemma has such a kittenish look in this picture! Those eyes!

And a few more queries.

Freeforms Tagset:
Nominator of Woldbuilding - Hinge is in an arranged marriage with A and but is actually in love with B. A & B catch feelings for hinge:
I approved this as is, but in hindsight I'm not so sure this is Worldbuilding so much as Scenario. Would you be terribly offended if I deleted this tag and re-upped it with the Scenario prefix? Or is there something about the Worldbuilding prefix that is particularly crunchy for your id?

Relationship Tagset:
SVSSS nominator(s) - please double check your noms. If they haven't been approved, it's because they are lacking both the designated Hinge and the disambiguation.

For everyone else who relationship tags haven't been approved - please ensure they are disambiguated, thank you! I'd prefer it if the disambiguation came after the Hinge to make it easier for me with keeping tags where they belong, but I have been approving things where that isn't the case.

Thank you!

Very random hockey posting, more posting this for my own reference later. I actually couldn't find these articles via the google the next day, I had to use my browser's history function to link them to someone.

Habs goalie Jakub Dobes got a warning, told to calm down. He was verbally engaging opposing players and challenging the officials' work on the ice.

Next day he addressed the incident. Dobes said he asked the referees to step in after an Islanders player said something that "had no place in a hockey game."

We don't know who said what, but a lot of hockey fans in multiple places are assuming it was Tony DeAngelo saying F slurs. I cannot find a citable source that he's got a history of that and hockey fans have a tendency to be too sure of themselves, but it's notable that there seems to be a broadspread agreement that's probably what happened... and then it was Dobes who got the warning for being upset about it.

Weirdly, Habs is a team I know very little about. I am a goalie fan in general, but Dobes was not on my radar. Going to be paying a bit more attention to Montreal.
