i'm shooting the stars
Sunday, June 27th, 2010 06:46 pmThis is for an extra credit assignment for my class, Professonals in Health. I had to take a 240 question assessment at at http://authentichappiness.com about my Signature Strengths.
It was incredibly hard to write this, because my depression likes to creep up on me and SCREAM IN MY EAR about how I don't have any strengths, there's nothing good about me, and to even think that there is is to be incredibly arrogant and disgustingly hubristic.
Nonetheless, with the help of Lyd, I persevered and this is the final result. So Mike, you were looking for things I'm good at? This isn't exactly that, but it's close enough.
Your Top Strength
Creativity, ingenuity, and originality
Thinking of new ways to do things is a crucial part of who you are. You are never content with doing something the conventional way if a better way is possible.
Your Second Strength
Capacity to love and be loved
You value close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated. The people to whom you feel most close are the same people who feel most close to you.
Your Third Strength
Honesty, authenticity, and genuineness
You are an honest person, not only by speaking the truth but by living your life in a genuine and authentic way. You are down to earth and without pretense; you are a "real" person.
Your Fourth Strength
Love of learning
You love learning new things, whether in a class or on your own. You have always loved school, reading, and museums-anywhere and everywhere there is an opportunity to learn.
Your Fifth Strength
Forgiveness and mercy
You forgive those who have done you wrong. You always give people a second chance. Your guiding principle is mercy and not revenge.
My eventual plan is to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. In that job, I primarily want to bring compassion and caring about individuals as more than their psychiatric diagnoses. This goes along with my 2nd strength of "capacity to love and be loved". I want to make sure that my caring about them as more than their diagnoses will be evident and expressed in my language, my attitudes and my behaviors.
I plan to continue learning as a lifelong practice, and my 4th strength, "love of learning," will certainly be a help there. In addition, I will incorporate my love of learning into continuing education to find new strategies, treatments and techniques to help others.
In my eventual practice, my top strength, "creativity, ingenuity, and originality" will be prized as a means to find new treatments for patients, if conventional strategies do not work. I will be tireless in utilizing my creativity, ingenuity, and originality to help all under my care, even and perhaps especially if the typical strategies do not produce results.
Regarding my 3rd strength, "honesty, authenticity and genuineness," I will strive to continue exhibiting these qualities in my professional and personal life. I find it absolutely necessary for anyone who seeks mental health care to have honest empathy from those who are treating them, and to know that their provider is absolutely, no questions asked, on their side. In addition, though I will be careful about how much disclosure is necessary, having been through many of the same struggles as the patients I'll be treating will further provide me with additional valuable insight and knowledge about their problems.
Finally, my 5th strength, "forgiveness and mercy" will be instrumental in assisting those patients who will, inevitably, relapse. Knowing that their provider is non-judgmental and willing to work with them wherever they may be on their journey will help with the fact that sometimes, human beings make bad choices, and they need to know that they can and will be forgiven for them so that we can move forward as a team.
