Ding ding ding: we have a winner for today's epic yet tiny pet peeve.

So I went with Lydia ([personal profile] panda) and saw the remake of 21 Jump Street in the theatre today.

It was actually a decent movie, overall, and we saw a matinee—so instead of an arm and a leg, I only lost several fingers.

(This pet peeve includes no spoilers, if you're worried. >_< )

I graduated from high school in 2003, and the two main characters had a flashback at the very beginning to just before prom the year they graduated, supposedly in 2005.

The movie starts with 'The Real Slim Shady' playing. OK, fine, whatever, Eminem isn't exactly timeless, but they're in high school, they're not supposed to have great taste.

But the entire flashback was just a shit-ton of anachronisms.

Clothes were crap that was popular, at the latest, in 2000. Hairstyles, again, same thing.

It wasn't just the guy who was supposedly 'the nerd' in high school that was like this, either. The other dude was supposedly 'super-popular dude' and he was just as bad. I'm pretty sure he was wearing JNCOs in the last scene of the flashback. JNCOs.

It's not like there weren't goddamn cell phones and digital cameras around in 2005, for christ's sake. It was seven fucking years ago, not the 19th century. Or even the '80s!

(And for completion's sake, I feel the need to mention that 'The Real Slim Shady' came out in 2000. You see what I'm saying?)

You know, that whole opening was a major wtf to me too haha (graduated HS in 2004). I get what they were trying to do (emphasize just how much shit has changed in so little time) but considering that their audience was probably people who went to HS then and not now, it doesn't work.

Yeah, I understand what they were trying to do--Jenko learns what it is like to be unpopular, and Schmidt learns what it is like to be popular--but a lot of it was quite a bit of a stretch. I'm sure some (rich, privileged) popular high school kids drive priuses etc but I'm sure a lot still drive hummers etc too.

Plus the single backpack strap thing was totally 1997.
