Fanvid Friday: Nanno (Girl From Nowhere)

Hello. I'm Nanno. Nice to meet you. )

My Comments: My recent obsession has been Girl From Nowhere, specifically our delightfully unhinged main character Nanno. I've been looking at various fanvids being made, and these two stood out to me, with their respective song choices and editing. The first (which captions are to be turned on for dialogue) mostly is around the first season and just her various revenge plots, while the second just centers around Nanno at her best: being brilliantly deranged in the best way. No spoilers are given in either, just Nanno being Nanno, and just a glimpse as to why I enjoy the character so much.

Medicare advantage, again

It turns out that changing Medicare Advantage plans is not costing me significant money: it looks as though the money I paid for prescriptions at the beginning of the year counts for a calendar-year maximum, even though I switched plans. I ordered another dose of Kesimpta on Wednesday, and they aren't charging me for it. As I said to [personal profile] cattitude and [personal profile] adrian_turtle, I'm glad that I could have afforded to pay that twice, but there are plenty of things I'd rather do with the money.

As a side note, this plan will pay for $65 per quarter of over-the-counter medications and some related things. I used part of this quarter's today to order Mucinex, Imodium, and an under-the-tongue digital fever thermometer. I think I can get them to pay for non-emergency transportation to medical appointments, and I should check what dental coverage I have.

From that reliable source of journal prompts, [community profile] thefridayfive

1) What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)?

Volunteered for WisCon in 2007, clearly LJ was where everything was Happening. Took me a year to figure out the culture. Moved to DW on 1 May 2009.

2) How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to?

79! Most are evidently dormant. (DW comms never die.)

3) Do you have a favorite community or one you check out often to see what's new?

I love the questions and answers at [community profile] little_details, where writers seek specifics about an infinite assortment of facts: paint manufacturing, historical Chinese tornadoes, NZ slang for three examples.

4) How did you pick your user name?

It’s a riff on my wallet name which I’ve been using it since 2001.

5) If you could change your user name, would you?

Nope.

The preceding two weeks of Friday Five questions didn't pique my interest, but this week's are great. Love a bit of meta-blogging. Thank you for the opportunity to navel-gaze.

  1. What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)?

I started off on LJ in 2001 because everyone was doing it. I created an account and then let it sit for a couple of weeks while I figured out what it was for. I think it was victorine who prodded me into posting regularly and then I just…never stopped.

  2. How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to?

A few dozen in total. Most of them are dead, the LJ communities in particular. The only one I participate in regularly is DW community [community profile] awesomeers, because I'm one of the two people who puts up the daily “Just One Thing” posts. I find it easier to write a short comment about my day there than to write up a full post, especially during the work week.

  3. Do you have a favorite community or one you check out often to see what's new?

See above. I also enjoy [community profile] thefridayfive, and I like reading [community profile] threeforthememories during its annual spate of activity.

  4. How did you pick your user name?

My current username is a play on my actual name. My original LJ name was “lilith” as that's the pseudonym I first adopted when I started interacting with online communities back in the 90s. Eventually I felt I'd outgrown it, and I've been nanila ever since.

  5. If you could change your user name, would you?

That would genuinely be a big decision after more than 15 years of using this one, in a lot more places than DW and LJ. I'd have to do substantive additional navel-gazing to work out what it would be.

There are 16 squares. 7 brown, 3 mostly-brown, 6 mostly-white. All of the completed squares except for one of the brown squares have been blocked and have ends woven in. I am 38% done with the knitting of squares. I have enough mostly-white yarn for one more square (probably). Y'know, I could use my scale to WEIGH THE YARN and see if there's probably enough. I could compare to an existing mostly-white square. Let me go do that.

There are 46 grams of yarn and 48 grams of square. So, maybe not enough yarn but it'll be close. To avoid rage-quitting due to being short of yarn, I'm going to have to make more mostly-white yarn before proceeding on that front. And that means it's time for some mostly-brown squares with the new, excitingly squishy yarn that has sufficient twist in the plying. Yay!

Wasn't there a scarf?

I do not want to talk about the scarf. It's not scarf season anyway and won't be for a while.

Life is pretty chill, for the most part.

Blair was hit hard with the flu and is way behind in almost everything. She graduates in May and is looking down the barrel of having to find a career in her field, though that's looking to be quite difficult these days (national parks and whatnot are being defunded, after all).

I need to do my taxes. I've been doing everything BUT.

Mostly between the two of us, we've been working, sleeping, and cuddling on the sofa watching youtube. It's a listless time, as the season changes over. We got a LOT of snow this last weekend, so much so that my work was closed down on Monday. Keeping things tidy, running errands, and trying to keep up with my shows. I'm not a very interesting person these days, haha.

We've got a small local convention we're going to, the weekend of May 1st, so we're going to have to get our cosplays out and clean and patched up if anything needs patching. We're concerned about Blair's, because, well. Since starting T, she has gotten quite buff, and there's a very good chance that parts of her costume won't fit now. We're also futzing with our hair, because neither of us are much interested in continuing to use wigs when we don't have to. Los Angeles Comic Con also FINALLY dropped their dates for this year, and I've submitted my time off request. It's going to be over Halloween weekend this year, which should be interesting. And a lot of fun.

Trying to finish this week's episode of The Pitt before I gotta get ready to go to Blair's mom's birthday dinner.

Final Fantasy XIV Stream! (tomorrow)

Tomorrow, I also plan to take it easy. We'll be doing the latest Hildibrand, then clearing out more open quests from my journal. I also might just keep an eye on the discords and hop around to FATEs or hunt trains. Whatever looks interesting and chill.

Start time is 7:30pm for both streams -- or later. Lately, we haven't even started dinner until 6:50pm (much to my displeasure, but can't be helped). I'm also not sure how long I'll stream, but I figure it will be at least 60-90 minutes?

Work yesterday left me incredibly frustrated. The ducks that are nibbling me to death have mutated to giant size and with razor-sharp beaks. Because I was so frustrated, I decided I needed to reread one of the most disturbing sets of Hannibal AU fics I've ever encountered: A Gifted Student and A Letter to My Abuser. They're gorgeously, awfully written. (If you decide to read them, pay close attention to the tags oh god pay close attention to them.)

A Letter to My Abuser is, in some ways, the harder read for me, because when I first read it I tried to figure out why I identified so hard with a side character; Ollie, so giddy to meet his literary idol, but forcibly warned/ran off by this AU version of Will Graham. When I read it last night, my brain went "ohhhhh, yeah, Neil Gaiman", and then I had to read some fluffy fic to scrub my brain.

I hope his victims get closure. And that they win the legal actions against him, because they deserve the money they're suing for.

---

EDITED TO ADD: I used to subscribe to FKAHerSweetness' Ko-Fi, as she left Ao3 and only posted her fic behind a paywall. I eventually ended my subscription because as time went on, I didn't enjoy how she wrote Will. She writes AUs only, and more power to her, but they became something I didn't want to read.

Well, I've locked myself out of my phone. I have snacks, music, my laptop, and a list of things to do to make the house nicer to be in. Let's see what I can get done.

Progress! The cat boxes are clean, there's a nice fire built up and ready to light for when our friends come over later this week, and I did a round of dishes before dinner.

Instead of writing, I rewarded myself with a nice sunny lie in the front yard, where I witnessed a minor car accident. Two drivers tried to go at a four-way stop simultaneously. Luckily the damage to both cars was minor and the drivers, from what I overheard, were civil about it.

Now that we've eaten and tidied, I'm going to take a crack at my Rare Kink Buffet fills. Knowing myself, I probably have 2-3 productive hours left until I get too sleepy. It's spring break, so free time isn't in short supply. I'll go to bed fairly early and be glad of the rest.

The local school districts are starting spring break today, so there's little substitute teaching work to be had. What little there is gets snapped up seconds after the listings go live. So I'm giving myself the gift of sun, writing, and light chores.

When I want to force myself to do non-phone things instead of doomscrolling, I like to lock myself out of my phone with a focus app. Usually I set up a long music queue before I do. Today, I forgot. I stared sadly at the two hour countdown on my phone screen, knowing I'd be so much more productive if only I could listen to something. Then I looked across the room at my record player and felt a bit silly.

In my defense, the record player has bluetooth, so I use it as a giant bluetooth speaker a lot of the time. I'm still embarrassed. At any rate, I'm listening to a Simon and Garfunkel record right now.

Today is mostly sunny and quite warm. It's already 78°F outside. 0_o

I fed the birds. I've only seen a few sparrows and house finches, but lots of birds are singing all around the yard. I suspect they're more interested in foraging.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I sowed 3 troughs with 'Sugar Ann' snap peas and 3 with 'Avalanche' snow peas. I put 2 peas in each end of a trough, leaving the middle open to plant other things. That makes 24 pea plants. These are bush types and did well last year.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I sowed one trough with 'Lovely Lettuce Mesclun Blend' and one with 'Thumbelina Baby Ball' carrots. I plan to sow more of those 2 weeks later.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I trimmed a few spray bits of brush in the parking lot, and followed up with weed spray. My partner Doug is trying to find someone to come install a load of gravel.

A large flock of several dozen blackbirds has gathered high in the trees.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I watered the six troughs on the benches of the new picnic table garden.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I used the last partial bag of compost & manure to spread a little over the eight big pots atop the new picnic table garden. So I'm out of that and nearly out of the American Countryside potting mix.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I put topsoil in four of the big pots atop the new picnic table. They're not completely full yet; there's room to add a bit of potting soil.

EDIT 3/20/26 -- I put topsoil in the other four of the big pots. I still have a partial bag left.

I am done for the night.

The Ainu are an indigenous people native to northern Japan and nearby parts of Russia. Kayano Shigeru (1926-2006) was a leading activist for Ainu rights in Japan, and eventually became the first Ainu member of the Japanese legislature. But his career in the Diet came after the publication of this book, which mixes memoir, history, and ethnography.

Kayano relates what he knows of his people's oppression in the 19th century, when the Japanese government pushed many Ainu groups onto marginal land and conscripted people for forced labor at minimal pay. This leads into his own childhood, when his family's generational poverty was exacerbated by his father's alcoholism. As a young man Kayano came to feel ashamed of being Ainu, culminating in a demeaning job at an Ainu-themed attraction, performing sacred dances five times a day for gawking tourists.

But the tourists' ignorant questions sparked Kayano's realization that there should be a real Ainu museum curated by actual Ainu people and fostering respect for their culture. He was inspired to travel the Ainu lands collecting one traditional tool or piece of clothing at a time (and always paying the people who made them) and eventually succeeded in opening the museum and renewing his own sense of pride in his heritage.

This short book highlights important issues, but I have to be honest—I found the presentation pretty dry. Maybe it's partly the translation? I also noticed that Ainu women weren't given much attention; Kayano has a wife, but her only character trait shown in the book is "supportive of her husband". But I'd say the book is still a good resource on a significant figure in global indigenous rights.

(As an aside: This book was on my TBR list for at least 15 years. This year I'm really trying to either read some of the long-time lingerers or admit I'm not going to read them, so having read this is a great success for me!)
