Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Where do you do most of your crafting?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and hot. It is 85°F already. >_<

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, several brown-headed cowbirds, and a mourning dove.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- We hauled the first three garden bags to the old picnic table. It's 86°F now and too hot to do everything at once. :/

EDIT 3/22/26 -- We hauled the next three garden bags to the old picnic table.

The first grape hycacinth is blooming randomly in the middle of the house yard, pollinated by tiny native bees.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I did a bit more work outside.

It's 87°F now, which is just ridiculous for March.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- We hauled the giant bag of raised bed soil to the side of the garden shed, where it's meant to fill in a hollow area.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I put a few scoops of composted manure in each of the top and bottom row of large pots along the north side of the new picnic table. This bag wasn't broken down as fully as usual. :/

I stepped out the door and it was cold. I checked the temperature: 57°F. Yes, it dropped 30 degrees is another an hour. For fucksake.

The first purple violet and the apricot tree are blooming.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

It is now 47°F with howling wind. 0_o

EDIT 3/22/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night. The weather has been two different kinds of crappy all day.

EDIT 3/22/26 -- It got down just below freezing overnight.

I'm super looking forward to going to my friend's party later this afternoon, only sucky part is having to walk to the Bart station with arthritis because the buses are screwed up all over Oakland today because of the damn marathon.

1. Someone on here linked to a Trans Rights Readathon, which I probably won't have time to read anything for before April, but the carrd has some book and charity lists.

2. I have been binge-watching YouTube lately (as usual). Some accounts I've watched include FunkyFrogBait, Lost in the Pond, Simon Roper. I also watched the National Theatre's filmed stage production of The Importance of Being Earnest, starring one of the Doctors I haven't seen because I haven't watched Doctor Who regularly since Matt Smith.

3. I've been deleting some unused or lesser-used social media accounts. Currently I'm clearing out my pinterest account because so many newer pins site-wide are maybe-AI and meanwhile the current site design doesn't show posting date so I don't know which pins to suspect and I don't feel the need to help pinterest identify authentic fanart.

4. Books: Still reading Hitler, the Germans, and the Final Solution. I also started Star Shipped, the latest Cat Sebastian novel. So far it's fine.

5. I see another pro-Hitler young Republic group chat has hit the news.

Anti-ICE tracking app

From this post in Daily Kos. "I built an ICE tracking app that can't be pulled from the App Store. Because it was never in one."

This person developed an app that tracks when ICE is present in the vicinity, and sends an alert to your phone. No cost. No ads. No presence in an app store for TPTB to pull it. Hosted in the Netherlands, so the US government can't issue a takedown order to the provider.

There's lots of discussion in the comments about "what if" and conversations about coding that I can't follow, but it might be reassuring to those on the fence... or maybe a red light. I don't know. But if you live in an area where ICE is -- or might be -- active, it's worth taking a look.

Forgot to say -- The developer wants news of this to spread as far as possible. So feel free to link to this post, or to the source post in DK, to share the information.

"You closed the door?" Shane whispered, fingers tightening around the back of Ilya's neck where his hair curled at the base.

Ilya shifted to look at him, eyebrows knitting together. His gaze flicked to the door handle then back to Shane. "Do you need the nurse?"

Shane exhaled sharply through his nose, fingers tightening where they'd tangled in Ilya's shirt. "No," he murmured, watching the way Ilya's pupils dilated in the sterile light, "I need you."

Ilya Rozanov wouldn’t call Shane Hollander his fuck buddy. He’d like to, but ever since hooking up at that All-Stars game two years ago, all they’ve done since is long-distance flirt. The night Ilya finally thinks he might be getting lucky, something happens, and Shane and Ilya’s lives go in two separate directions. They don’t see each other again.

Four years later, Ilya decides to take his summer off from hockey to open a flower shop in rural Canada. It’s the kind of stupid, impulsive decision that has him questioning what he’s doing with his life.

Until Ilya runs into the tattoo artist who works next door.

Question a Day Memage Catchup...

Doing the dance of the robot vacuums - or rather, the robot vacuums are dancing - while I'm sitting here with my feet up - listening, and typing along on my laptop. Tech - sometimes? I love it. Not often, but sometimes.

I do have to watch the vacuums and make sure all the chords are safely off the floor or they will attempt to eat them, which never ends well.

Catching up on the Question a Day Meme for March:

16. How often do you eat out?

I can't remember if I answered this one or not, and too lazy to go back and check.

Not often. If at all. I do occasionally pick up something for lunch while at work - but I only get it at Pret Manager - and it's either a white bean salad, a falfala Mediterranean Salad or Morrocan Lentil Soup. Everywhere else is either too expensive or doesn't cater to folks with highly restrictive diets and/or are coeliac. Read more... )

17. It’s Kurt Russell’s birthday – a child actor who grew up. Have you seen any of the Disney films in which he acted (he played the college student Dexter Riley)?

Yes, pretty much all of them - Read more... )

18. Which flowers or trees are blooming where you live now?

Well, very little is at the moment? It's still winter and cold, the warmest we've gotten it up to a high of maybe 60. Right now, it's cloudy and 51 F, feels like 48 F. So the trees and flowers are being a touch hesitant? I see some crocuses here and there, and some buds on the trees, and bushes, but that's it.

19. If you had the space (and the time), would you like to keep chickens?

No. I do see them though. There's someone about two blocks up and one across that keeps them. They keep brown chickens, and a rooster.
But no - I don't want to raise birds.

20. Was learning a new language part of your education when you were at school? Can you still remember any of it?

Yes. And ...very little of it. I wasn't very good at it, and unfortunately all my attempts to immerse myself in it - in order to learn it - were dashed. Read more... )

21. It’s National California Strawberry Day. What is your favourite way to eat strawberries?

With whipped cream or dipped in chocolate.

22. Do you still buy physical books, or do you tend to buy e-books these days? Does it depend on the type of book (i.e. fiction or non-fiction)?

I buy both. But I swing more towards e-books because it's become increasingly difficult to read physical books without glasses. And, I'm tough on books - I get things on them, tear the pages, they get rumpled as I read them. The last paperback I read, is kind of a rumpled mess. People don't like to loan me - books, once they figure out how tough I am on them? I kind of love them to death?

Almost done with my Angel S5 rewatch - stretching it out. Damn. It's better than I remembered. That series holds up well. Particularly the last season, which is even more relevant now than when it first aired over twenty years ago.

There's some good lines:

"We're apparently in the midst of the apocalypse and have been for some time. Evil just neglected to let us know about it. And, as it turns out, we're fighting on the wrong side - although the winning side, since evil is winning, so I guess it depends on how you look at it?"

"Trying to cure Cancer, Mr. Wyndom-Price?"
"No. It wouldn't be profitable. I'm thinking we're probably making a major profit off of it as it is. With all the hospital visits, etc."
"True. Our client holds the patent on it."

"The worst part wasn't going into the basement and getting my heart ripped out over and over - don't get me wrong that's bad. No, it's the promise of the nice life, the kid, the family, the lawn, the sunny sky, the home, and the realization that it is all just a lie - none of it is real."

The satire in this show is on topic and well done. I miss it.

One day, Ilya will just keel over and die from this. Today, thankfully, is not that day.

Shane doesn't discover new kinks so much as he comes up with them with his own beautiful mind. Ilya is along for the ride.

“No, no kids or wife. You?”

“Not my own, no. I have the whole group here though, so…” he said, shrugging and Shane nodded. “Also no wife, by the way. Not really… interested in having one either.” he added, blushing like crazy and Shane almost couldn’t stop himself from smiling a huge smile. Yeah, thank god, he wasn’t looking for a wife. Because Shane was about to make him his husband. He wanted to say something, maybe also add, that he’s not interested in finding a woman for himself, but at this moment Arthur left the classroom running straight to Shane.

I've finally found the time to rewatch Heated Rivalry.

With all the fanvids I've seen, I actually feel like I've watched most of the scenes more than twice. And yet it was a complete delight and I was never bored. ^^

I've also relistened to the third episode of Ember & Ice and it was equally wonderful.

"There must be something deeply wrong with his mind if he loves someone like me," he thought, angling his head towards Ilya's hands, yearning for his warmth, yearning for his touch. "I'm sorry for waking you up," Ilya whispered, "I had some pelmeni in the freezer that I wanted to have for dinner and now I can't find them anymore. Did you eat them, my angel?" "My angel," Shane thought, closing his eyes and relishing in the feeling of Ilya petting the side of his face, "He's calling me his angel."

******
When Ilya wakes Shane up in the middle of the night to get a kebab, the carefully constructed walls around Shane's relationship with food start to collapse. Underneath the weight of Shane's unadressed issues and Ilya's childhood, their relationship and Shane's body and mind are threatening to collapse. But after all, they love each other.
